The literal meaning of the Afrikaans word Rooibos is red bush. Despite the botanist’s difference, it is well known as a form of popular tea worldwide and thus affirming the Shakespeare’s writing, ‘A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.’

About the Plant

Rooibos plant is a shrubby bush with thin and needle like leaves. Leaves produce a light, sweet and delicious brew with a difference in color. The light red color lets its drinkers enjoy a nice change from green or brown color of traditional teas.

South Africa, the native place of Rooibos bush, had witnessed the great relishing of its population with this wonderful brew for centuries. During World War II the import of Asian teas had been restricted. So millions of people had to look elsewhere to find their afternoon cup of tea.

Farmers in Cedarberg mountains used to harvest the low-volume seeds to get their Rooibos drink that had gained popularity all over the world. Finely chopped leaves are left in South African sun to dry.

The original Rooibos green leaves turn red after fermentation process. Fermentation is a kind of oxidation process in tea processing that bears no resemblance with chemical fermentation used to manufacture alcohol where sugars are fermented to make alcohol. The oxidative fermentation of leaves makes them ready to yield a delectable drink.

Health Benefits

The great taste of Rooibos is fortified by Mother Nature with other benefits as well. Rooibos possesses antioxidant properties without having caffeine. This caffeine free drink can be used freely by persons suffering from hypertension. The cancer preventing elements are intact even without caffeine. The low tannin content allows you to enjoy several cups without any concern of poor digestion, constipation, lower absorption of iron and other minerals from intestine.

Immunity boosting property is also found in Rooibos by some researchers. Stomach cramps are also relieved with its use. Persons suffering from Kidney stones can also enjoy it as it is free from oxalic acid. So you can assume Rooibos to be a recipe or remedy for health.

You may find the product labeled Herbal Allergy tea, owing to its reputed ability to aid allergy sufferers. Or it may be labeled Red Bush and available in the section used to treat skin disorders, such as eczema.

But, again, by any other name it is still a wonderful addition to the tea tin. And that’s a tradition that is worth maintaining.

We know that we can’t afford four to five hours for drinking tea like people who enjoy it in Japanese tea ceremony of legendary fame. Then what could be a better way of enjoying a fine cup of tea for the average busy guy who can’t spare more than a few minutes of his time?

The tea bags have come to rescue the person with the target of a few minutes to a great cup. Tea bags were first introduced by Thomas Sullivan who sampled different teas by enclosing them in cloth bags so that his prospective customers could select a tea. The original intention was that customers will open the bags and then prepare the tea as usual.

Perhaps some lazy fellows have tried it otherwise without opening the bag, but by dipping the sample bags in a cup of hot water. This unusual method was soon became popular and became hit as a sensational discovery as it enabled persons to drink the tea to last drop without having any leaves in their mouth.

It’s Not The Bag – It’s The Quality And Freshness

After more than 100 years of introduction of tea bags, the bags and the tea have seen a great change. Finer, stronger and lighter bags are now available. They have to pass through stringent health standards and quality control. Perhaps all changes are not better ones. Many times, the content of bags had suffered in quality.

Some tea bag manufacturers used the left-over tea, called fannings. This scrap of tea leaves is processed to fill thousands of tea bags. As these low quality bags made their way into the end consumer kitchen, he would have to consume a low quality tea for a higher price. It might have been compared to stale tea by some.

Another blow to tea bags came in 1970s when “natural” became the buzz word and products that came from plants were adored by the public. Tea certainly qualifies to be natural. As a result, loose leaf tea was looked on as a superior alternative. And, in many cases it is.

Fine Loose Teas

Hundreds of fine loose leaf teas are imported from various parts of globe. Loose leaf teas from China, India, Japan, and elsewhere can be as pleasing to the connoisseur as a fine wine. The gentle jasmine from China stacks up well against a sweet orange tea from Turkey. Or, one may enjoy an outstanding mint tea from Africa. Our favorite place to buy such quality teas is: Amanzi Tea

Again, tea bags emerged without being a symbol of earlier low quality. Many vendors have evolved from the granola days to combine the high quality of a loose leaf tea with the convenience and other benefits of a bag. Though they often go by the more elegant name of “sachet,” it’s still tea in a bag. But the difference is that the tea is of the utmost quality and is sold fresh. That difference is important.

So, retain your busy lifestyle when you must. But take a few minutes on occasion to celebrate your efforts. Treat yourself to a truly fine cup of tea, and enjoy it without a dozen distractions. You’ve earned it.

The tea supporters consider it to be the oldest drink while beer supporters argue that the use of beer is supported by 10000 years of history while tea is supported merely by 5000 years.

Let us put controversies aside! When we use common sense, we have to accept that tea is the oldest drink. The leaves of tea or several other herbs had been used worldwide by thousands of tribes. The preparation of tea is simple in comparison to more complex preparation of beer or wine.

How Popular is Tea?

All right, tea is the oldest drink and let us find out how popular it is all over the globe. The enormous popularity of tea could be gauged by its annual worldwide production targeting around 2 billion pounds. And realize that how many cups of tea we make with one pound of tea. Year in and Year out, we consume 2 billion pounds of tea every year.

How Much Caffeine is in Tea

Even though tea leaves have 1-3 % of caffeine that is two times or more than coffee beans. But the net amount of caffeine in a single cup of coffee is 100 mg that is considerably more than 60 mg in a cup of tea. The difference is due to preparation methods – coffee beans or powder dissolve completely in a mug whereas tea is only partly utilized.

Is Tea Healthy?

The health benefits of coffee and tea are the result of many similar compounds. Antioxidants,…………….. Caffeine has also shown its beneficial effects on body and mind when used in moderate amounts.

Why do people use tea with such great fondness? It couldn’t be history or economics or science or medicine behind tea. Perhaps tea is simply a wonderful drink, perhaps tea fulfills the various demands of masses.

When is Best to Drink Tea

Whether you want a robust pick me up in the morning, or a relaxing hot cup at night, tea is – dare we say it – perfect. It clears out the cobwebs and at the same time relaxes. Iced or hot, green or black (or Oolong, which is in between), or even red or white (yes, they exist), tea tastes great and makes you feel wonderful.

Drinking tea has been a perpetually delightful personally and socially right from the unknown nooks of past to modern times. People do use other drinks like beer or coffee or wine as well but none is close to tea. We can find something like beer ceremony in very few cultures except college students occasionally.

Tea ceremonies are not exclusive to Japan. English love tea every afternoon. Many clubs are devoted to tea in New York. East and West have many differences and tea is one definite measure to bridge that gap. But all over the world – China, Turkey, Russia, Australia, the U.S. and the UK, and all the points on the map in between enjoy a cup of tea.

Enjoy Tea

So wherever you are, you can now have a Wu Yi in a Yixing clay pot or a Rooibos in a Danish glass cup. You can enjoy a lemon grass tisane or even a blueberry vanilla Ceylon. What you can’t do, if you are among the over one billion tea drinkers in the world, is to resist a perfectly brewed cup of the world’s finest drink – Tea.

Have you been wondering what the difference is between regular and decaf coffee? There’s been a long standing debate amongst coffee drinkers as to which is better.

If you happen to be among those who vote for caffeine-free coffee then you may find it interesting that a type of coffee tree was recently discovered that has almost no caffeine. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that that coffee tree will be commercially grown anytime soon. So, for now, you may be stuck with traditional caffeine removal methods.

You are probably wondering how such methods affect the taste of your coffee, right? Well, honestly, blind taste tests have shown that lots of people can’t tell the difference between regular and decaf if the cups are brewed properly. If you think that there is a difference, though, you are not crazy. The difference does exist.

First, you need to understand the:methods of removing caffeine from coffee.

The least expensive way to remove caffeine from coffee is hot water and methylene chloride treatment. It begins when the coffee beans are rinsed in hot water after they are picked. The hot water rinse softens the outside of the fruit, so it can be easily removed. Once that is done, the coffee beans are rinsed in a chemical, called methylene chloride. The methylene chloride bonds with the caffeine and then both the caffeine and methylene chloride are rinsed away.

An alternate method of removing caffeine from coffee is a hot water soak. When the beans are soaked in hot water for several hours, all of the caffeine is rinsed into the water along with several flavor components. After a while, the beans are removed and the methylene chloride is put into the bath. As it does in the rinsing process, it bonds to the caffeine only. After that process is complete, the beans are put back into the bath, where they are able to reabsorb their flavors.

If the idea of methylene chloride doesn’t appeal to you, don’t worry. A method called the Swiss method doesn’t use it at all. The Swiss method also involves soaking the beans in hot water for several hours. However, instead of methylene gas, the water is filtered through activated charcoal, which bonds to the caffeine.

There is a major debate about whether or not any of those methods remove flavors from the coffee permanently. If you’d rather take a different approach to limiting your caffeine then consider darker roasts. Darker, less acidic roasts usually have less caffeine, because the caffeine is lost as the beans are roasting. Also, if you want to cut your caffeine intake back a bit, without eliminating it entirely, you can try a blend of decaf and regular coffee. That may help you limit your caffeine, while increasing the flavor of your coffee.

As with anything else, regular vs. decaf coffee is all a matter of individual preferences. Now that you know the differences, you can find the coffee that works best for you. Enjoy your own personal perfect cup!

The history of black tea could rightly start with the debate of what could be the ancient beverage. Tea, beer and wine could fight for the first place. Countries like United Kingdom, that are popular with huge consumption of tea, are only recently associated with tea on a historical basis.

Who had the idea of putting the leaves of Camilla sinensis into hot water to make a brew is better left unanswered? Perhaps it could have been an accident or some experiment.

When Did Tea Drinking Really Begin?

History of Vedas of India, the most ancient literature of world and Ayurveda textbooks along with ancient Chinese texts are replete with the use of other herbs as hot infusion or decoction. Historians suggest the great likelihood of the start of use of black tea in China almost over 5000 years ago.

The fondness of black tea spread rapidly because of its good taste and health benefits. The Ch’a Ching, written by Chinese ex-monk Lu Yu, has the mention of various popular methods of preparation of tea of 800 A.D. Gradually Buddhist monks, particularly Yeisei, spread the word about tea in Japan and it soon had royal favor.

When Tea Begins Becoming Popular

Seventeenth century witnessed the black tea conquering the globe. The Portuguese and other western voyager came in contact with Oriental shores. They delighted with this all new beverage unheard of in their native countries. When they returned home in early 17th century, their treasures included the precious tea leaves. They multiplied their fortune rapidly with the then-expensive novelty.

During mid 17th century, Britain finally joined and imported tea from China and the East Indies. As is obvious now, it became so popular that afternoon tea is now strongly associated with that Britain.

Tea Around the World

With the merger of both the major importers of tea, John Company and the East India Company, tea reached every nook of the globe with their monopoly. By the end of the 17th century tea imports were 40,000 pounds.

Gradually with increasing popularity, the novelty had become a commodity. Over 240,000 pounds were imported into England in 1708 and the leaves were being sold in common food shops in Holland and France. Most of Europe doesn’t have the right climate to grow its own tea. The drink that had been imported and made popular by royalty was now consumed by nearly everyone.

At the same time, tea was becoming popular in other nations around the world. The Russian Tsar Alexis received several chests as a gift in the early 17th century. By the end of it the Russians were engaging in regular trade with China across their common border. The price of tea had been very high due to long travel of thousand of miles. Despite all odds, the practice spread throughout society and tea could be found in every samovar.

Boston Tea Party

The United States had a little ‘ceremony’ called the Boston Tea Party. As an act of protest against the heavy-handed British government, Americans protested by dumping large quantities of the good into the Boston harbor. In reaction, the British government closed the port and troops occupied the city. The resulting revolution changed the history of world as we all know.

Be a part of history and delight yourself with fine cup of tea today!

Can green tea prevent Cancer? No, yes it is NO despite all the shouting and roaring of marketers and supplements manufacturers. Then isn’t there any truth in these claims? Yes, the truth is unlike the claims of marketers but they are as a growing body of repeatedly affirmed clinical studies. More work is still needed to accept them as medically acceptable truth.

Cancer is simply the uncontrolled and unregulated growth of cells that in later stages begin to spread in other parts of body. Studies and researches are still going on to understand its pathology, its occurrence, prevention and treatment. Adding to complexity is another fact that several organs can suffer with cancer like lungs, prostate, breast, bladder, bones, blood and brain.

Tea offers its widely popular cancer prevention benefits along some specific lines – the antioxidant properties, immunity boosting effect, antiproliferative effect. Studies all over the world have suggested the benefits of tea for cancer along one of the above properties.

Several ingredients of tea have demonstrated antioxidant property – EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) and Catechins. Antioxidants are free radical scavengers that slow down the growth of cancer cells in tumor.

As little EGCG as in three cups of Green Tea per day have shown to slow down the cell growth of lung cancer cells in a recent study at Kyushu University of Japan. The test tube studies with EGCG confirmed the inhibition of an enzyme present in cancer cells that is required for cellular growth and division.

The ideas have been further supported by a Spanish-British co-study and researchers found that EGCG of green tea prevented cancer cells from dividing by inhibiting its growth to reach an optimum size. This effect of EGCG might result from its ability to bind with a specific enzyme Dihydrofolate reductase whose presence is essential for cellular growth.

Another important ingredient of tea, Catechins is also found to inactivate harmful oxidants and to diminish the size as well as number of cancer cells in a study conducted by U.S. National Cancer Institute.

Researchers of USC (University of Southern California) found similar beneficial results associated with the use of green tea in breast cancer. Regular green tea drinkers had significantly less incidence of having breast cancer even if they adjusted other data like family history, exercise and diet.

They suggested that Green tea might reduce the growth of new blood vessels in tumor. Cancer cells, just like any other, need nutrients from blood to grow. They stimulate the growth of blood vessels in order to get supply of nutrients. Tea jeopardizes the chances of getting nutrients by inhibiting growth of new blood vessels and thereby creating conditions for poor growth of tumor. These results have been reaffirmed by a joint study by the University of California and the University of Texas.

The adaptogenic or immunity boosting properties have been found in studies with five cups of tea per day. The toned up immunity helps to prevent cancer by helping the body kill emerging cancer cells. Alkylamine antigens may be responsible. Consuming them by drinking tea helps one’s body fight off against tumors.

In a green tea research study on bladder cancer, an extract created from green tea changed the actions of actin, a structural protein required by cancer cells to function. A process called ‘remodeling’ allows cancer cells to invade nearby healthy tissue. A compound made from green tea modified the cancer cell’s ability to carry out this process.

While research continues, many studies demonstrate tea’s ability to help in preventing cancers. As drinking a few cups of tea per day looks to be beneficial with no drawbacks. Give it a try!
