Have You Tried Kona Coffee?
If you think of gourmet coffee, you probably think of many blends coming from South America and Africa. You probably don’t think of the Arabica beans growing right in the United States. However, the beans are grown right in Hawaii and are grown on the biggest Hawaiian island. Kona is one of the world’s best coffees and is very distinct when it is compared to other traditional blends. This type of coffee is only from the beans grown on the west side of the Hawaiian island. These beans are grown in a unique location and are not found anywhere else. The volcanic soil and the sunshine and tropical conditions help to produce the unique coffee flavor.
Kona Coffee Beans have a very unique and has a complex flavor. It is slightly acidic and has a very delicious aroma and flavor that are spicy and rich. This flavor is not found anywhere else in the world. This coffee was actually brought to the Kona region from the country of Brazil. The coffee was in the form of cuttings and it took a long time to become a full crop of beans. In the 1800s, the Kona coffee became a commercially-grown crop and has continued to be very popular.
What happened in 1899 changed Kona coffee. The world coffee market crashed and the owners of Kona plantations had to lease parts of the plantations to other individual farmers. These farmers took over 5 to 12 acres of land and began to run them as family businesses. These farmers worked very hard and made a high quality coffee bean to sell. Another thing that helped was the rocky slopes and the volcanic soil. This made the ripening cycle of the Kona coffee bean very unusual. The workers actually inspect each bean to make sure that those that have not ripened are not picked before their time. This means the finished crop is excellent in quality.
The growing conditions aside, the high quality of the Kona coffee bean is because of the extra care taken by the individual farmers who produce the beans. There are approximately 600 farms that produce the Kona coffee beans and they produce up to two million pounds of the coffee beans each year. Buying Kona coffee means you’ll experience a rich and spicy flavor and aroma that you’ll remember forever.
